German Origins

Ostenberg is a very rare surname in America.  Only a few dozen Ostenbergs appear in modern telephone books, and probably all of them are descendants of either Carl Ostenberg of Prussia or Lars Ostenberg of Sweden. Carl (known as Charles in America) was born in Elberfeld in 1821. Elberfeld was a city in Nord Rheinland (North Rhine Land) in the nation of Prussia.  Elberfeld and several other industrial cities along the Wupper River were combined into the new city of Wuppertal in 19xx. Wuppertal is xxx, in northwestern Germany.

Carl Ostenberg was a son of Diedrich Ostenberg and Elisabeth Strackbein. In 1841 Carl married Caroline Gull˙, a daughter of Joseph Gull˙ and Rosina Tukarts. Joseph Gull˙ is said to have come from the Alsace-Lorraine region. This is an area that alternated between French and German control for many years, and is now part of France.
