Welsh Origins
William and Mary Rees lived in Meline Parish, in Pembrokeshire (the County of
Pembroke), in Southwest Wales. Caleb left home to work in the iron works and
coal mines of Glamorganshire, South Wales, in Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil. Life
there was not easy for Caleb, and he decided to leave for America. First, he
married Rachel James in Merthyr Tydfil. She came from the parish of Treleach a'r
Betwys in Carmarthenshire; whether she came to Glamorganshire on her own, with
her parents, or with Caleb is not known. Within days after the marriage, Caleb
and Rachel were on their way to America.
Emigration to America
Caleb and Rachel Rees left Liverpool on the Ship Circassion. The rigors of
their voyage are documented in a diary kept by Caleb, and in an article written
by a nephew of his (also named Caleb Rees) in the Welsh literary journal Y
Llenor in 193x.
Ohio
At first, Caleb was one of many Welsh coal miners in Minersville, Southern
Ohio.
Nebraska

Rachel carries on.
