Irish OriginsThis line of Barnetts in America is said to have descended from a Philip Barnet (spelled with one t), born in County Down in Northern Ireland in about 1785. Also coming from County Down were Joseph Brown (born in Newry before 1765) and his wife Jane Wiley. Jane is said to have been known as Lady Jane Wiley, having descended from a part of the aristocracy of Northern Ireland. Most of the people of Northern Ireland by this time were Protestants who came from either England (which provided the aristocracy) or Scotland (typically the laborers). The immigrants from Scotland to Northern Ireland became known as the Scotch-Irish; Philip Barnet may have been one of them. English and Scottish OriginsA family named Estill came from England, and a Jennings family probably did as well. A family of Killian probably came from Scotland. Most or all of them were in Eastern America by about 1770. Emigration to AmericaWe don't know exactly when or how Philip Barnet got to America. It was sometime between his birth in about 1785, and the birth of his son William C. Barnet in 1814. Joseph Brown was in America in 1796, when his daughter Jane Brown was born. Michael James Barnett's DescendentsThis table shows him and his wife as the first generation, and his descendents for two more generations. The descendents are shown in bold. Spouses are also shown, but not in bold.
VirginiaJane Brown was born in Virginia 27 Aug 1796. She probably married Philip Barnet there, as their son William C. Barnet was born in Virginia on 18 June 1814.
