Contents: Ancestors of Lewis Morgan, Welsh Origins, Emigration to America, Kansas, Nebraska

Related Families: Price, Thomas

Morgan is an ancient Welsh name. Some say that it means "one who comes from the sea" and others say that it derives from the Old Bretonic mor cant or "sea bright". In any case, Morgan is one of the common names in Wales, where it can be either a surname or a given name.

Many Morgans have come to America throughout its history. Most of the better known Morgans settled here in the 18th century, or even before, but the branch of interest here comes from a family that arrived in America relatively recently.

Ancestors of Lewis Morgan

This table is a summary of the ancestors of Lewis Morgan, who was born in Llanedy Parish, Carmarthenshire, Wales, and emigrated to Brown County Kansas in 1871.

L.C. Morgan's History

In 1953, L.C. Morgan of Hiawatha Kansas wrote a short history of these Morgans as well as a summary of Lewis Morgan's descendants. Click on the title of this paragraph to view it. The main text is supplemented by nine appendices of genealogical tables, which are accessible from the first page.

Lewis Morgan's Family in Wales

For at least several generations, the Morgan family farmed in Llanedy Parish, in Carmarthenshire (the County of Carmarthen), in Wales. This is a small parish near the shallow River Loughor, an area with both farmland and coal mining. The Morgans were farmers. Lewis Morgan married Sarah Bowen in 1844, and they had twelve children--all born in Llanedy Parish. Three of these children died as infants. The other nine grew up in Wales, and as young adults went to America, as did their parents.

Emigration to America

Three of Lewis and Sarah's children went to America first, in 1872. These included William, John, and Hannah (who had previously married Morgan WALTERS. These four, and two WALTERS children, went with William BOWEN and his wife Sarah EVANS. William was Hannah's uncle, and Sarah Evans Bowen was Morgan's first cousin. All of this group ended up in Brown County Kansas, although William MORGAN, Lewis and Sarah's oldest son, stayed in Ohio for several years first.

Lewis and Sarah and most of their remaining children came to America in 1873, and settled in Brown County Kansas. They farmed in Padonia Township, northeast of the county seat of Hiawatha.
